Incidents At Valero’s McKee Refinery In Sunray, Texas
Valero’s McKee refinery in Sunray, Texas was built in 1933. There have been numerous serious safety incidents and accidents at the refinery.
For example, on February 16, 2007, a propane fire erupted at the McKee Refinery in Sunray, Texas. Three employees suffered severe burns and the plant was forced to temporarily shut down. The Chemical Safety Board determined that the fire resulted from a leak in the propane de-asphalting. The Chemical Safety Board also determined that the fire spread quickly because of the rapid collapse of a major pipe rack carrying flammable hydrocarbons which had not been properly fireproofed.
