Incidents At The Motiva Port Arthur Refinery
The Motiva Port Arthur Refinery is a joint venture between Shell Oil Company and Saudi Refining. Shell Oil Company is the U.S. subsidiary of a European oil company. Saudi Refining’s parent company is the state oil company of the Arab state of Saudi Arabia.
In May 2012, Shell and Saudi Refining completed a major expansion project at the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery. It is now the largest refinery in the United States. The facility can process 600,000 barrels of oil per day.
There have been a number of serious accidents and incidents at the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery.
For example, in June 2012, a caustic chemical seeped into the crude distillation unit at the facility, causing the unit to be shut down.
There were also multiple fires at the refinery throughout 2012 and 2013.
In 2010, a man working at the Motiva Port Arthur Refinery was crushed and killed by a construction crane. He suffered a massive head injury. A Port Arthur Justice of the Peace called the incident one of the worst he had ever seen.
