Contractor Dies After Incident at ExxonMobil Refinery in Baytown, TX

February 13, 2020

ExxonMobil's refinery in Baytown, Texas

A contract worker has tragically died after being injured at the ExxonMobil refinery in Baytown, TX on February 11th, 2020. On the same day before a fire started at ExxonMobil’s refinery in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. According to the local news, they reported that emergency crews were at the scene at about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. The injured worker was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

The contractor was employed by Contech Control Services, according to ExxonMobil officials. A written statement was released by ExxonMobil expressing its “deepest sympathy” to his family and his co-workers.

The full statement follows:

“We regret that a contractor was fatally injured in an incident that occurred at the ExxonMobil Baytown Complex on February 11, 2020. The person involved was immediately attended to by emergency responders. We are greatly saddened by this and express our deepest sympathy to his family and his co-workers.”

ExxonMobil didn’t say any details about the identity of the worker or how the incident occurred.

Unfortunately, this is not the first incident at ExxonMobil’s Baytown refinery. This refinery was built in 1920. There have been a number of accidents at the refinery that have resulted in personal injury negligence lawsuits.

For example, on July 31, 2019, a fire at a Baytown ExxonMobil plant injured at least 37 workers and sent a plume of smoke over a Houston-area chemical facility for the fourth time since April. It was the second fire in the same year.

Our thoughts go out to the family of the worker after this tragic accident. Our experienced refinery accident lawyers at Morrow & Sheppard LLP will follow up with any updates to the investigation as information becomes available.
