On April 17, 2013, an explosion and fire at the ExxonMobil refinery in Beaumont, Texas injured at least 12 people.
The fire was precipitated by a hydrotreater heat exchanger. Numerous negligence personal injury lawsuits were filed.
ExxonMobil claimed that the fire resulted from ignition of hydrocarbons released from a heat exchanger connected to a catalytic desulphurization unit. ExxonMobil would later blame the actions of a cleaning subcontractor, Clean Harbors.
