Incidents At Marathon’s Texas City Refinery
The Marathon Petroleum Corporation refinery in Texas City, Texas was built in 1931. There have been numerous serious safety incidents and accidents at the refinery.
On March 23, 2005, a massive explosion at the Texas City Refinery (owned by BP at that time) killed 15 workers and injured hundreds more. While re-starting a unit that had been down for repairs, a tower being filled with gasoline overflowed, backing excess gas into a back-up unit, which also overflowed and sent a geyser of gasoline into the air. The gas ignited, causing the massive explosion.
BP was forced to set aside $1.6 billion to settle claims and personal injury negligence lawsuits arising from the explosion.
