Incidents At The Valero Port Arthur Refinery
The Valero refinery in Port Arthur, Texas was built in 1901. There have been numerous serious safety incidents and accidents at the refinery.
For example, there were three major accidents at the Port Arthur refinery between July and August 2007. At the beginning of July 2007, the refinery spewed 400 gallons of gasoline onto a dock and into a nearby waterway. Later the same month, the refinery released hydrogen sulfide into the air that sent nearly 40 people to the hospital. Then, at the beginning of August 2007, a 20-30 foot pipe “ballooned up and blew,” causing an explosion and fire.
